Benefits of Scales

Five-finger scales or pentascales, octave scales, two octaves, four octaves, scales in 3rds, 6ths…the list goes on. Why bother practicing scales? I wasn’t always the most enthused about practicing scales when I was young. I did them because I was a good student, but I didn’t fully appreciate their importance.

Scales help train the fingers and ear to locate and hear notes within a particular key. As you progress on the instrument, you’ll most likely be playing more advanced repertoire or pieces, and become acquainted with more and more key signatures (more sharps and flats). It’ll be to your benefit to practice your scales so your fingers have a firm grasp of the key in which you’re playing.

Scales help build finger strength, coordination, and teach the ear to listen. The ear must carefully listen to achieve evenness between each note of a scale. Think of the finger dexterity and control involved. You might need to start slow to first achieve a steady sound, but through attentive practice, you’ll be able to increase the speed.

Scales can be a challenge, but they will serve you well, no matter where you are in your musical journey. I encourage you to check in with your teacher about practicing a scale today.

And of course, feel free to check out my instructional videos for more information on scales.
